Hello, my friend, welcome.  I am happy to meet you here but I also commiserate because, to use a tired old cliché,” I feel your pain”. If you are anything like me, you have probably arrived here after years of dieting and ceaseless wrestling with weight problems.  When did you join that endless roller coaster ride of dropping pounds then gaining them back?  Staring in the mirror with disbelief as those “skinny” clothes no longer felt or looked good, struggling to pull waistbands or fasteners together and wondering how the heck did this happen?

 At first, in the early years, it was easy to cut back and drop a few pounds but over time this becomes more and more difficult as your body rebels, slows down your metabolism and treacherously holds on to every calorie ingested.  The only solution then, we are told, is to increase activity and so start the exercise programs, begun so enthusiastically and which eventually peter out. Like me and countless others, your baseline weight steadily increased until eventually your new goal weight was at a level you would have been appalled at a few years earlier! You lose weight then before you know it back it comes with a few extra pounds added for good measure.

DIETS, DIETS AND MORE DIETS!!!  


Standing at the supermarket checkout, the magazines headlines scream at you that they have the solution to your weight problem in the form of yet another diet.  Sometimes you succumb and buy the magazine, read the success stories attached to that particular diet and resolve to try yet again. This is the answer, this latest diet. This is “The one” that will transform your inadequate self into a copycat version of the latest movie star, give you an enviable waistline and make you feel good about yourself.  Next week they will offer you a new solution but that’s another story.

You decide to go with this one so you read the instructions, shop for the items that are necessary for this plan and attempt to stick to it. Who knows how long it lasts, a few days? a few weeks? Then another program fails and somewhere, deep inside yourself, you come up with the answer that the problem lies with YOU.  It is YOU who is failing in some way. After all, if other people can make these diets work for them as the “before and after” photos show then the answer must lie with you. There must be something wrong with you.  You are just not good enough, not good enough at all.

EXCUSES! EXCUSES! EXCUSES – I’VE HEARD THEM ALL AND WORST OF ALL MY OWN!

 

As a Registered Nurse  I worked in the UK and most recently the US.  Part of my job as an RN is to “educate” my patients on making lifestyle changes to promote optimal health and, for a short time in Great Britain, I was class leader at a national slimming club.  I have heard every excuse under the sun as to why people are not their ideal weight, some bordering on the ridiculous INCLUDING MY OWN!! I always had some good reasons why I kept putting on weight.

As leader of the Slimming Club I would deliver a prepared talk to the class followed by the weekly weigh in.  As soon as I announced it was time for the scales and progress cards to be marked half of the class would disappear to the rest room, as if voiding a small amount of urine would make a difference to their weight.  I would stand there beside the scales, smiling and giving words of encouragement as each person stood on the scale and offered up that week’s excuse.  “ It was wee Jimmy’s birthday this week and I put on a spread plus  we had a delicious birthday cake. I couldn’t not eat it”.   “I have my period so I am holding water”  “My period is coming up”  “My period has just gone”.  “My budgie died.  I was upset and stressed” and so on and so on.

THE MORE I DIETED THE FATTER I GOT…..

Over the years my encounters with patients, family members and friends and, of course, my own yoyo dieting has left me extremely puzzled as to why diets just don’t seem to work. After all, it’s really quite simple or should be.  Take a diet, follow it, lose weight, maintain weight and that should be the end of the story but it’s obviously not or most people would be at their ideal weight and obesity would not be the huge and ever growing problem it has become. 

During the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States and rates remain high. In 2010, no state had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. Thirty-six states had a prevalence of 25% or more; 12 states had a prevalence of 30% or more.  In the UK an estimated 60.8 % of adults and 31.1% of children are overweight. Obesity is responsible for more ill health than smoking. Being significantly overweight is linked to a wide range of health problems, including: diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, indigestion, gallstones, snoring and sleep apnea, stress, anxiety and depression plus infertility and some cancers. Both governments have spent huge budgets to educate and provide guidelines for healthy lifestyles that we fail to follow.  The question is WHY?

IT WAS HARD TO MAKE SENSE OF IT ALL BUT EVENTUALLY THE PENNY DROPPED..

When I first searching for answers I quickly became overwhelmed at the sheer number of solutions presented to us. We are bombarded on every level from the dizzying array of diet and healthy eating books on the subject on the book store shelves to the literature peppered around the Doctor’s surgery, TV programs that deliver the latest research on what we should and should not be eating and, even worse, what might kill us if we eat it.  The supermarket shelves are packed with diet pills, teas, low fat, low protein, low this and low that prepackaged products. Celebrities extoll the virtues of their individual and often crazy solutions. Is it little wonder we want to give up and cry “Oh no, not another diet!”

DIETS MAKE YOU FAT!!!

 I’m sure you have wondered, sometimes in despair, why you can’t seem to stick to any diet for long? Research has shown that it doesn’t matter which diet you choose – if you stick with the program you’ll lose weight in the short term but you will more than probably gain it all back, plus more! The bad news is that most diets do not produce long term results with figures touted between as low as 5% and 20% of dieters maintaining long term weight loss.  It is very difficult to find valid research however one study published in American Psychologist concluded that “diets are not the answer” to the obesity epidemic and that while most diets will produce short term weight loss these results are rarely maintained long term. Furthermore, after two years or more 83% of participants had regained more than they had lost!




The proof is right before our eyes….
We know diets don’t work. Been there, done that, worn the T-shirt as the saying goes.  I, for one, am living proof and I am not ashamed to admit it. I even have the fat wardrobe and the thin wardrobe plus the photographic proof of my struggle with food.

Clever marketing campaigns encourage you to part with your cash and to try out their latest offerings by selling you the idea that you’ll feel good when you lose weight.  Since we now know that diets don’t work, why on earth would we continue to focus on losing weight by the old means, already tried and failed?
